Today we’re excited to share a drill inspired by the one and only Scottie Scheffler, world-renowned for his ball-striking consistency and power. This easy-to-follow ball striking drill focuses on creating the right space in your swing for cleaner, more powerful shots—perfect to practice at home with your Haack Pro Golf Net from Rukket Sports!
Why Space Matters for Better Striking
Scottie Scheffler’s incredible ball striking is largely thanks to a simple drill that focuses on creating space in his golf swing. By keeping his hips and pelvis back throughout the swing, he’s able to return the club handle to its original position at impact, producing those clean, powerful strikes. The best part? This drill is straightforward to learn and can be practiced anywhere.
Setting Up the Drill
The most important step to getting Scottie Scheffler's drill right is creating space for your swing. Begin by placing a small object, like a pencil or tee, just outside the butt cap of your club’s grip. Then, grip down on the club to shorten it by about three to four inches, with your pointer finger resting on the shaft.
Once that is complete, position your club about three to four inches above the ball to begin our next step, air swings.
Executing the Drill
Make several air swings, concentrating on returning the handle to its original position. Focus on keeping your pelvis back throughout, which will naturally create ample space for your arms to travel through the shot. The distance between your pelvis and the club helps you focus on returning the handle to its starting position without crowding your arms or hips.
Make sure your handle doesn’t lift up during the swing—this will help with consistent loft and direction. Keep the handle in its initial position from start to finish, promoting consistent contact.
Applying the Drill to Real Shots
Once you’ve got the hang of it with air swings, move on to hitting actual shots. Use the same focus as in the practice swings: keep your hips back and return the handle to the same spot.
Pay close attention to your body during each swing. Is there enough space for your arms? Are your hips staying back? Make small adjustments to improve contact and feel, and get in touch with the unique sensations of each movement.
